“Comedy is simply a funny way of being serious.” - Peter Ustinov
This workshop focuses on the structure of comedy, and the discipline necessary to deliver a strong comedic performance, while addressing this main issue: comedic performance is much more than setting up jokes and delivering punch lines. Participants learn important, necessary aspects that most actors naively avoid when approaching a comedic scene. Thus, participants have an advantage at auditions, and deliver more powerful and ultimately more memorable performances than actors who have not had this workshop experience.
Comedy comes in numerous forms, and each week the focus is on a different style of comedy. A particular week’s style is learned by example, with students participating in the performance and analysis of existing scenes from movies, plays, television, vaudeville and sketch. Participants receive scene assignments, and return the following week for presentation of those scenes.
Showcases of participants and their study will be presented to the public and industry professionals on occasion, at the discretion of the instructor.
